Botulinum Toxine

What is Botulinum Toxine?

Botulinum neurotoxin type A is best known for its use in plastic surgery, but at the Medifit Reha rehabilitation center, it is used to treat neuromuscular disorders. The cause of spasticity is damage to the brain or spinal cord. This can result from cerebral palsy, a stroke (CVA/brain hemorrhage), multiple sclerosis (MS), or spinal cord injury. Spasticity causes pain, difficulty in personal care, and impaired movement.

How does Botulinum Toxin work?

When a small amount of Botulinum Toxin is injected into the muscle, it blocks the signal between the nerve and the muscle. This prevents the muscle from contracting and reduces spasticity.

When the spastic muscle relaxes, it can stretch out. This helps the muscle to grow and it can be lengthened with therapy. It takes 1 to 3 days for Botulinum Toxin to start working, and the best results can be noticed after 1 to 2 weeks. The effects of Botulinum Toxin are temporary and can remain in the muscle for a few months. At the Medifit Reha rehabilitation center, Botulinum Toxin injections are administered during the rehabilitation program if indicated. Botulinum Toxin injections work best in combination with a therapy program.
