Rehabilitation in a sunny and professional environment
A knee replacement is a radical operation, but with the right guidance, you will be able to move smoothly again within a few weeks.
At Medifit Reha in Spain, we combine top-level orthopedic care with a relaxed rehabilitation environment on the Costa Blanca.
After discharge from the hospital, an intensive three-week rehabilitation period follows, fully supervised by a Dutch-speaking team of specialists.
Read below step by step what your recovery looks like and what you can do yourself to get moving again faster.

The first stage – rehabilitation in the hospital
What to expect at this stage:
- Daily exercises under the guidance of a physical therapist.
- Use of a CPM device to passively mobilize the knee joint.
- Exercises for the quadriceps and hamstrings to maintain muscle strength.
- Chill with ice to reduce swelling and pain.
đź’ˇ Tip: Change positions frequently to prevent bedsores and free the heel with a pillow.
The second phase – rehabilitation at Medifit Reha
What does this phase entail?
- Daily individual and group therapy.
- Hydrotherapy, muscle strengthening and gait training.
- Personal assistance from a physical therapist, occupational therapist and physician.
- Advice on posture, sleep and daily movements.
Your knee is gradually loaded, and with proper guidance, you will soon be able to climb stairs, ride a bike and walk again.

Important exercises for good recovery
In bed
- Slowly move your feet up and down to stimulate circulation.
- Tense the front thigh muscle (quadriceps) for 6 seconds and relax.
- Glide the heel over the bed to flex the knee and then fully extend.
In sitting position
- Bend the knee as your foot slowly slides backward across the floor.
- Place your healthy leg over the operated leg to gently gain additional flexion.
- Fully stretch your leg by placing it on a chair; keep this up for 10-15 minutes.
đź’ˇ Tip: Exercise short sessions several times a day – frequency is more important than intensity.
Rules of life after a knee replacement
During the first six weeks, caution is important to avoid complications.
- Avoid standing or sitting for long periods of time.
- Use good footwear with cushioning.
- Avoid lifting heavy weights or groceries.
- Preferably sleep on the back or healthy side with a pillow between the knees.
- Driving can be done as soon as you have sufficient control – consult with your doctor or insurance company.
Frequently asked questions about knee rehabilitation
How long will the knee remain painful?
The first three weeks are the hardest. After that, the swelling decreases and the pain gradually subsides. After 3-6 weeks, the worst pain is usually gone.
How long does the knee stay warm to the touch?
A warm knee is normal for up to 12 months after surgery, especially after exercise.
How far can I bend my knee?
On average, a knee replacement achieves 120° of flexion. A minimum of 110° is required to cycle comfortably.
What if my knee remains swollen after weeks?
Cool with ice (with a cloth in between) and keep moving. Persistent swelling may indicate overuse – consult with your physical therapist.
