After years of living with chronic pain, fatigue and increasing physical limitations, Ria travelled to Spain to take part in an intensive rehabilitation programme at Medifit Reha. What she found was more than treatment alone: she found a team that listened, understood her story and supported her recovery every step of the way.
A Long Road Marked by Health Challenges
Seventeen years ago, Ria’s life changed unexpectedly after contracting Q fever. Since then, she has faced a variety of health challenges that gradually affected her quality of life.
Like many people living with chronic pain and complex long-term symptoms, she often found herself searching for answers. Some symptoms were difficult to explain, while others had a significant impact on her energy levels, mobility and daily activities.
Despite these challenges, Ria worked hard to rebuild her life. She learned to adapt, found ways to manage her limitations and eventually returned to work, where she was able to continue developing both personally and professionally.
However, around two and a half years ago, her condition began to worsen again.
Walking became increasingly difficult, cognitive problems appeared more frequently and everyday tasks required more energy than before. As her symptoms progressed, her world gradually became smaller.
Searching for a Different Solution
Although she explored different treatment options in her home country, Ria felt she was no longer making meaningful progress.
Everything changed when a friend told her about rehabilitation programmes in Spain.
With the support of her family doctor, she decided to investigate further and eventually chose to begin a rehabilitation programme at Medifit Reha in Dénia.
From the moment she arrived, she noticed a different approach.
“For the first time in a long time, I felt truly seen, heard and understood.”
Rehabilitation Focused on the Individual
One of the aspects Ria appreciated most was the personalised nature of her treatment.
Rather than focusing only on symptoms, the rehabilitation team took the time to understand her personal situation, her goals and the challenges she faced in daily life.
The programme was continuously adapted to her needs, allowing different healthcare professionals to work together and support her recovery from multiple perspectives.
This multidisciplinary approach helped create a rehabilitation experience that felt tailored specifically to her.
“Here, you are not just a diagnosis or a list of symptoms. You are treated as a person.”

A Multidisciplinary Rehabilitation Programme
During her stay, Ria participated in a comprehensive programme that included physiotherapy, occupational therapy, hydrotherapy, core training and psychological support.
Each therapy played a role in helping her work towards her individual goals while building confidence in her abilities again.
For Ria, however, one of the most valuable aspects was the personal attention she received throughout the programme.
Feeling understood and supported became an important part of her rehabilitation journey.
Returning Home with Hope
Recovery is rarely a straight path, especially for people living with chronic pain and complex health conditions.
Ria knows that her journey is not finished. There is still work to be done and challenges to overcome.
However, she returns home with something she considers invaluable: greater confidence, a better understanding of her body, practical tools for the future and renewed hope.
“Recovery begins when someone looks beyond your symptoms and sees you as a person.”
Her story is a reminder that rehabilitation is not only about treating symptoms. It is also about helping people regain confidence, improve daily function and move forward with the support they need.
