The multidisciplinary treatment team of MedifitReha

For your multidisciplinary treatment, we engage several specialized practitioners. Together with the rehabilitation physician, they form your treatment team. The team is under the final responsibility of the rehabilitation doctor. Our team of therapists consists of more than twenty therapists supplemented by a team of ten physicians and specialists.

The members of our treatment team are in close contact with each other. This means that consultations can take place quickly and multidisciplinary consultations take place every week. All this ensures good cooperation between the various disciplines. The protocol can thus be adapted very quickly to your current situation, thus guaranteeing the best possible recovery.

Dr. Francisco Cholbi – Medico rehabilitador

Dr. Mart Jan Rongen – Medical Director

Dr. Rongen is an experienced surgeon with a proven track record in medical practice. He is working in Oncology, Emergency Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and General Surgery. He is a graduate of Utrecht University, PhD from Maastricht University.

Miguel Martorell Schonenberg – General Manager

Gerard Krol – general manager

Gerard is a manual therapist, sports physical therapist, specialist in pulmonary rehabilitation and in temperomandibular therapy and has a master’s degree in acupuncture. He has gained extensive experience in various physical therapy practices and rehabilitation centers in Europe. He has also studied business administration computer science, sports economics and marketing. Being able to contribute to someone’s health is what he loves about working within health care.

Dr. Laura van Lochum – Cardiologist

Dr. van Lochem trained as a cardiologist in the Netherlands, specializing in hereditary (familial) heart disease. Dr. Van Lochem has been working in Spain for several years.

In order to keep abreast of the latest techniques and treatments and to comply with European guidelines for cardiologists, Dr. Van Lochem continues to undergo continuous training.

As a cardiologist, she believes it is important to have a good and open contact with her patients. The patient is central and time is made for the patient to tell their story. For the cardiologist, it is very important to have an understanding of the patient’s medical background, so that a correct diagnosis can be made, coupled with the right treatment. Dr. Van Lochem explains the clinical picture and treatment in understandable language and is closely involved in your rehabilitation treatment.

Berrie Gerrits – Psychotherapist / GZ-Psychologist

Berrie’s working method is characterized by a concrete and clear approach, aimed at strengthening one’s own abilities in the here-and-now. He combines conversations with cognitive training for attention, concentration, working memory, intellectual skills and stimulus processing.

In addition to working at rehabilitation clinic Medifit Reha, he has his own practice and teaches at LerendBrein (Jungle Memory, Acoustic Pioneer, RaiseYourIQ), gives lectures and workshops and is a freelance lecturer at HAN and Saxion University of Applied Sciences.

Natasja Janssen – GZ Psychologist

As a psychologist at Medifit, I can be found at several locations (Denia and Moraira) where I guide people in their mental health and make a valuable contribution within the multidisciplinary team. Through Medifit, I mostly see people with (chronic) medical conditions that have an impact on the clients’ quality of life. My goal is to guide them in (re)finding their strength to start living more instead of surviving.

I stand for a safe environment where everyone feels heard and understood and where people can be themselves (without judgment). My approach is characterized by supportive and insightful conversation techniques paired with practical and experiential exercises. I use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), EMDR and especially acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). ACT teaches people their pain and discomfort to exist and give space. Because instead of losing energy fighting against all that they experience as negative, I teach them (the often limited) energy to use effectively. Thus there is a change in attention to personal values and goals and they take the steps towards a life of greater freedom.

Rafael Abbott – physical therapist/health scientist

Rafa is a physical therapist with a master’s degree in sports science. With more than 20 years of experience in physical therapy, both in sports physical therapy and rehabilitation. In addition to this he has a specialization in health sciences and has extensive experience and qualifications in neurological rehabilitation, nutritional science, hydrotherapy, orthopedic rehabilitation both traumatic, pre- and post-operative, manual therapy techniques, functional taping (kinesiotaping – course leader), neurological treatment by Hippotherapy, pulmonary physiotherapy and psychomorphology. All aimed at treating the patients as well as possible. His passion lies in the active rehabilitation process, so he has been the manager in the rehabilitation and exercise room since 2006. He himself is a top athlete and his greatest hobby is trail running (running in the mountains), in which he achieves top positions in the most extreme races such as, for example, the UTMB Montblanc (175km).

Jenna – physical therapist

Jenna did an internship with us during her studies and joined us after graduating from university in Alicante.

jenna has a lot of knowledge and experience in PCS rehabilitation, neurological- and orthopedic rehabilitation. In addition, she is very accommodating and totally committed to the patients.

Mariana Alén González – Osteopath (physical therapist)

Mariana is a physical therapist graduate and went directly to study Osteopathy at UMH Elche University and obtained her Masters in Osteopathy in 2017. Furthermore, she specializes in neurodinamics and taping. Currently, she is further specializing in ultrasound and invasive physical therapy.

She started her career in sports physical therapy at various sports clubs and then went on to work in various physical therapy practices. She has enjoyed working in our rehabilitation center as an osteopath for many years now. Her involvement with the patients and her knowledge, which she constantly increases by attending trainings, courses and seminars, make her of great value. She also has a great interest in nutrition, which is an important part of rehabilitation.

Ellana McKerrell – case manager/physiotherapist

Ellana has been working with us for several more years and is now a case manager/physiotherapist. She ensures that the organization in Teulada Nursing Home, HCB Denia and Medifit Denia runs smoothly.

Vicent Camarena – physical therapist

Specialized in invasive physical therapy and has been with us since 2008. He is very valuable because of his knowledge and humor. Can’t imagine being away from us anymore.

Aitana Guillot – physical therapist

Specializes in geriatric physical therapy and works at the nursing home in Teulada. Very accommodating with the patient and puts her knowledge into practice very well with her patients.

Ana Maria Garcia – occupational therapist

Our PCS and MS specialist in the field of occupational therapy. She uses her cheerfulness to motivate patients so that the best results are achieved.

Sergio Lopez Verhoeven – physical therapist

Case manager in at our new location Hospital Vithas in Valencia. In recent years increased his knowledge in running the rehabilitation department of Medifit within the hospital HCB in Denia.

Jildis – physical therapist

All-round physiotherapist and specialist in applying for iMSR with the dutch health insurance companies.

Victor Martinez Mari – Osteopath/Physiotherapist

Specializing in osteopathy and geriatric physical therapy.

Natalia Nieves – occupational therapist

Specialized in geriatric occupational therapy and teacher at the university in Alicante.

On 09/11 I started the 8-week internal COPD Rehabilitation program at MedifitReha here in Spain. This was my last chance, I was no longer happy with this life. And it wasn't pleasant for those around me to see me like that either.

My rehabilitation stay at MedifitReha in Dénia was exactly what I needed. Living with MS means dealing not only with physical limitations but also emotional challenges - and at MedifitReha, I felt supported in both areas.

The program is intensive, highly professional, and personalized. I trained for three, sometimes four hours a day, five days a week - always adapted to my capabilities. This level of intensity, care, and focus is simply not possible at home in the Netherlands. Yet it never felt overwhelming.
The team knew exactly how to challenge me in the right way.

I noticed real improvements: more strength, increased muscle mass, better balance, and most importantly - more confidence in my body. I also learned to accept certain limitations, which gave me peace of mind. After all, everyone has limitations - some due to illness, others due to age or life circumstances.

The daily hydrotherapy was particularly helpful - training in warm water allowed me to move freely and safely, without fear of falling. It was the perfect way to work on my balance and core stability. I also enjoyed the cognitive training with the VR headset - it was fun and playful, yet challenging at the same time.

Another important part of the program was the psychological support.

My name is Ab with years of experience with Medifit.

First time was October 2015 after knee prosthesis from HCB Benidorm to Benitachell: it was wonderful!
Second time January 2018: was for back surgery at HCB and another stay in Benitachell!
Third time August 2021 after my wife's long admission to HCB, 2 months rehabilitation in Moraira / Benitachell.
Fourth time and hopefully the last time! November 2023 for a hip prosthesis in the new HCB Denia and since November 6th rehabilitating at Hotel Danyia in Denia with Medifit.

In my opinion, the best formula for rehabilitation so far! Amazing help from Ray with transport from the hospital. Nothing seems too much for him, and that's been true all these years (I've known him since 2015). Very kind help from him and the Medifit ladies upon arrival. Everything is considered to make you as comfortable as possible. Being able to get food independently is a huge improvement. Help if needed from Medifit also on-site five days a week. Physical therapy that is very personal and patient, but also experienced - I find it wonderful and professional. To conclude, I think Medifit with this formula (four days admission for hip or knee surgery) and then 3 weeks of rehabilitation in a beautiful location with absolutely everything you need, has succeeded in thinking about the person behind the patient... Bravo... Bravo... Bravo! With my thanks to the amazing team at Medifit, I now conclude and wish all new patients for hip or knee prostheses this wonderful experience, despite the initial discomfort (which is just part of the process).
