Meet the people behind Medifit

If you choose Medifit, you obviously want to know the people who will be treating you and what our vision is. Get to know us!

Rehabilitation center MedifitReha located on the Costa Blanca, in Spain was started by Miguel Martorell Schonenberg and Gerard Krol. Both have studied physiotherapy at the Fontys college in Eindhoven. After their training they did many refresher courses, such as manual therapy, sports physiotherapy and rehabilitation therapy. Work experience was gained at various rehabilitation centers in the Netherlands (Eindhoven), England (London), Italy (Milan) and Spain (Valencia).

In 1998 we got together again and started a physiotherapy practice in Moraira. We brought together many disciplines in the physical therapy practice to best help our patients. The clinic quickly grew to include different disciplines. This gave rise to the idea of starting a rehabilitation center with a unique rehabilitation philosophy.

In September 2002, the International Rehabilitation Center MedifitReha was born. With the experience gained in several large rehabilitation centers in Europe, different rehabilitation programs have been developed. All rehabilitation programs have as their main principle; personal intensive rehabilitation tailored to the needs and capabilities of the patient.

Rehabilitation center MedifitReha is known today as one of the better rehabilitation centers in Europe.

Treatments and rehabilitation process

At MedifitReha, you will find a professional team of therapists and medical specialists specializing in rehabilitation medicine. We have extensive “hands-on” experience in terms of treating a variety of neurological, physical, psychological and cognitive disorders.

We guide and monitor the patient in the rehabilitation process from the first to the last day of his/her journey. Our objective is: to provide highly qualified care and efficient rehabilitation focused on each individual complaint. We achieve this by taking ample time for each patient. We constantly adjust the rehabilitation program based on what is possible at any given moment. This personal (1:1), person-centered and intensive approach is what makes our concept unique!

The team of MedifitReha

Our treatment team is led by a rehabilitation physician; we have multidisciplinary meetings every week to discuss each patient individually. The rehabilitation center is led by a Dutch management team that ensures that everything runs smoothly and as desired.

Costs and fees rehabilitation abroad

All administrative necessities are carefully handled by us so that you can fully focus on your rehabilitation. Our rehabilitation programs are reimbursed from the basic package of all Dutch health insurances. The procedures of the health insurance companies change constantly and are not all the same. There are insurers who pay us directly, so you don’t have to advance anything yourself. However, there are also insurers that pay the patient directly, in which case the patient must first advance the rehabilitation himself.

Back in the Netherlands again

When you return to the Netherlands, we will provide you with a medical transfer report in English and, if required, a translation into Dutch. If necessary, we will contact your treating physician/specialist in the Netherlands. We also cooperate with rehabilitation centers in the Netherlands, where you can go on outpatient treatment if necessary.

Cooperation with TopzorgGroep Nederland

In order to provide the best possible service to everyone, we have partnered with TopzorgGroep Nederland.

You can contact us to inquire about how we can assist you. If you have an indication for outpatient or inpatient rehabilitation, an intake appointment can be scheduled with our rehabilitation physician.
During this intake, the rehabilitation physician will assess whether rehabilitation is indeed necessary and determine the appropriate type of rehabilitation. Together with you, we will initiate the process for your rehabilitation in Spain.
After completing the rehabilitation program, online aftercare will be provided if needed.

In addition, through TopzorgGroep you can sign up for surgery at the HCB hospital. You can receive preparatory therapy in the Netherlands at the TGZ and Medifit will do the rehabilitation before and after surgery in Spain. When you return home to the Netherlands you will receive further guidance from TopzorgGroep if necessary.

Collaborations with other medical specialists

We want to be as committed as possible to your care. That’s why cooperation is important. After all, rehabilitation is one of the links in the care chain. Care in our rehabilitation center takes place after coordination with other specialties such as: those in hospitals, in nursing homes, at home care, with your family doctor and other primary care disciplines.

If possible, before you begin a rehabilitation program with us, we are in contact with your practitioner up to that point, in order to best prepare for your arrival. At the end of the rehabilitation process, we always write a comprehensive final report, so that your doctor, specialist or therapist is informed exactly what we have done and what our advice is for possible continuation in your home country.

First time was October 2015 after knee prosthesis from HCB Benidorm to Benitachell: it was wonderful!
Second time January 2018: was for back surgery at HCB and another stay in Benitachell!
Third time August 2021 after my wife's long admission to HCB, 2 months rehabilitation in Moraira / Benitachell.
Fourth time and hopefully the last time! November 2023 for a hip prosthesis in the new HCB Denia and since November 6th rehabilitating at Hotel Danyia in Denia with Medifit.

In my opinion, the best formula for rehabilitation so far! Amazing help from Ray with transport from the hospital. Nothing seems too much for him, and that's been true all these years (I've known him since 2015). Very kind help from him and the Medifit ladies upon arrival. Everything is considered to make you as comfortable as possible. Being able to get food independently is a huge improvement. Help if needed from Medifit also on-site five days a week. Physical therapy that is very personal and patient, but also experienced - I find it wonderful and professional. To conclude, I think Medifit with this formula (four days admission for hip or knee surgery) and then 3 weeks of rehabilitation in a beautiful location with absolutely everything you need, has succeeded in thinking about the person behind the patient... Bravo... Bravo... Bravo! With my thanks to the amazing team at Medifit, I now conclude and wish all new patients for hip or knee prostheses this wonderful experience, despite the initial discomfort (which is just part of the process).
